How to Prevent Laptops from Overheating? Try these Methods

Laptops generate heat while running, primarily when they perform resource-intensive programs such as charging, gaming etc. In such a regard, many laptop owners experience so-called overheating issues. There are many reasons for it. Sometimes an old laptop overheats because of some hardware issues that most people struggle to fix. In such conditions, you should take appropriate action to get it fixed.

And other times, it’s caused by a lack of airflow that resists heat dissipation and causes the device to overheat. However, by no means do you have to discard your old one and buy a laptop because some ways can help you cool down your device in a jiff.

Keep a Check on the Cooling Fans:

Whenever you feel your laptop is overheating, place your hands over the cooling fans to check. If your laptop fan is discarding hot air from the vents, it’s working fine. If you feel no or very little air coming out, it might be because the fan has accumulated dust or broken down. You can open up the machine or get help from a professional to remove the dust. If it’s broken, you might have to buy a laptop fan as a replacement.

Pro Tip: Regularly clean your laptop vents to prevent the build-up of dust & other foreign particles.

Elevate Laptop to Facilitate Ventilation:

Sometimes overheating is a result of poor ventilation under the laptop. Such a case happens when you place your device directly on your lap while using it, which restricts the airflow and leads to overheating. You can solve this issue by elevating your machine and supporting its base with a book or small stand. It’s also wise to get a cooling pad for your laptop for the desired ventilation. There are a variety of cooling pads available in the market for you to choose from.

If possible, Buy a Lap Desk:

An alternative method to enhance laptop ventilation is using a lap desk. The small rubber feet under the desk provide standard airflow and boost the airflow beneath the machine. A lap desk is quite helpful for maintaining a constant temperature, preventing your laptop from overheating.

Maintain an Ideal Fan Speed:

When your laptop runs resource-intensive applications, the fans also run faster to dissipate heat generated by the machine (to run resource-intensive applications). You can control the fan’s speed through programs such as Speed Fan, favoured for Windows. If your laptop can maintain a constant airflow, the fans automatically start to run at optimal speed.

Close Unwanted Power Intensive Apps:

Running too many intensive apps can cause the laptop to overheat. For example, if you run a browser with flash media and software like Photoshop simultaneously, the CPU has to work hard to support these programs. And as a consequence, it will generate more heat. You can keep your machine cool by closing unrequired apps while you multitask. To shut the unrequired apps, go to the task manager, click View, select the apps you think occupy memory and click on End Task.

Keep Your Laptop at a Sane Place:

One of the other causes of laptop overheating is extreme exposure to high temperatures, especially during summer. High temperatures cause hard drives to expand and batteries to damage. Therefore, you must be considerate in this regard. Avoid keeping your laptop from direct exposure to sunlight for a longer duration. If you are facing an issue where your device is slowing down or shutting down, get it repaired as soon as possible.

Pro Tip: Try to maintain the surrounding temperature between 0℃ and 35℃ and avoid extreme cold and warm conditions.

Go for a BIOS Firmware:

Getting BIOS firmware updates is also essential. BIOS monitors the temperature and adjusts operations accordingly. It allows you to fix the problems with your computers, which isn’t possible with drivers or an operating system update. To do so, open PC Manager, then go to driver management to update your laptops in terms of their performance & improving their cooling capabilities.

Check for Wear & Tear and Power Plan:

A laptop is a complex machine. If it’s generating heat, it might be because some parts of it are damaged. If such an instance has occurred, you might get a replacement for the damaged component. Sometimes an incompatible power plan can also cause overheating. Changing the power plan can help you deal with this situation.

Hope the solutions listed here will help you counter the overheating issues. If you are dealing with a damaged situation or struggling to find what’s happening with your device, you can seek professional help to get those issues solved at the earliest. Connect with your native PC manufacturer, and they assist you with everything related to warranty, continent replacement and others.
