How to install mods for The Sims 4 on a PC

Before proceeding makes sure The Sims 4 is updated to the latest version. To do this you will have to open Origin, the EA client that acts as a DRM for the game, open the My Game Library entry, and right-click on The Sims 4 icon. If the game is not up to date there will be an option, in the drop-down menu, Update game. If necessary, select it and follow the instructions.

Now open File Explorer (the yellow folder icon available on the system tray) and navigate to the folder containing The Sims 4 system files. The default path is Documents> Electronic Arts> The Sims 4.

Check that there are two other folders: Mods and Tray. If for any reason they are not present, create them yourself. How? Right-click on an empty space and select the New and Folder items from the menu that opens. For any other doubts, I refer you to my tutorial on how to create folders on PC.

Done? Perfect. Now open, your program to decompress the mod you downloaded and want to install. Check the extension of each file. The .package, .ts4script, and .pyc files must be placed in the Mods folder. Any other type of file (the most common are .bpi and .blueprint but there are others as well) goes into the Tray folder. Caution. Sometimes in the compressed archives, there are text files or images with installation instructions. It is not necessary to copy these files to the game folders. Kody the Sims 4

Don’t see the file extension? You probably need to enable it from the operating system. Don’t know how to do it? No problem! I have written a guide on this. I invite you to read it and everything will be clearer to you.

At this point, in order to use your personalized content, it remains only to make one last step. Are you ready? Good. Then start the game The Sims 4. From the main screen open the options menu by clicking on the symbol of the three horizontal dots. Then select the Game Options item.

From the menu on the right, you will have to choose the item Other. Here check the items Enable custom content and allowed script mods and mods. A warning will appear regarding the risks that this option poses to game stability. Confirm that you want to activate them by clicking on the √ symbol. Lastly, before returning to the main menu, click the Apply changes button in the lower right corner of the window.

If you still don’t see the custom content while creating your sims or during the game, please restart the game. If you want to view them in the Gallery, remember to select Include custom content in the side filter bar.

Mod-related options usually have a wrench symbol in the menus they are present in. Remember that The Sims 4 has a large number of official expansions and some mods use elements of these DLCs, so they require you to have them installed to work. If you do not have them, you may see these contents as missing or only partially present. Always check the mod release notes: usually the author always writes which expansions are needed to use what he created.

If a mod gives you problems and you want to remove it, just delete the related files from the Mods or Tray folder. I recommend that you always make a backup of the customized content you decide to install. Official patches for the game may overwrite them and render them unusable. After The Sims 4 update, you may need to repeat the content activation process from the Game Options menu. If after a patch and after reinstalling a mod it does not work properly try to see if there is an updated version of the extra content online, compatible with the latest version of The Sims 4.

If you are using a Mac, the steps to follow are very similar to those just seen for Windows. The path to extract mods is always Documents> Electronic Arts> The Sims 4.
